Overview

Careful planning that begins when students make the transition from middle school to high school is key to accessing scholarship awards. Students and their parents should discuss interest in various subjects and fields, as well as interest in attending college. Learning about the entrance requirements for a variety of colleges will help with academic planning. Admission criteria, along with a list of available scholarships and other helpful information, is available on college, university, and technical college websites.

Most scholarships require a “C” average or better and the most competitive scholarships look for higher grades and a record of challenging courses. Earning the good grades needed in order to apply for most scholarships requires focus, organization, and hard work, and parents should stress the importance of academic achievement. Getting involved with school and community activities is also important as many scholarship applications ask for this information to learn about a student’s group work, special interests, and leadership skills.Participating in extracurricular activities is also an excellent way to explore new interests.

General information about scholarships available to SHS students is included in the Spartan Student Handbook that is distributed to all students at the beginning of each school year. In January, a detailed list of available scholarships is given to all seniors, and students are advised to meet with their counselors to learn about other scholarships that may be available on a one-time basis.
