Letter from the President

Welcome to the new Web Site/Homepage of the Scholarship Foundation. This past year the Foundation was active, hopefully getting itself organized to do more for the youth of the Superior School District. It enlarged its Board, began compiling a Directory of Spartan Alumni, started a new web site, organized a Fund Raising committee, reviewed how Scholarships are awarded and hired an Executive Director. Of course it continued monitoring the finances, accepting new gifts and new scholarships and publishing the newsletter, Spartan Connection.

The past year saw the Foundation involved in the awarding of about 100 scholarships and renewing some scholarships, all having a value in the area of $400,000. This includes a number of new scholarships, such as the Roderick and Joyce Campbell Scholarship and the Keith Gilbertson Scholarship. In addition the Foundation made a number of awards of funds to current students to enhance their education by attending events or going to places that would not otherwise be affordable.

The Foundation hopes to move ahead with its fund raising efforts especially starting the Fall of 2007. The emphasis of this fund raising will be to secure monies to enhance or help current students with their educational opportunities. There have been substantial cutbacks in school funding but there have not been any cutbacks in the costs of going to events such as Model U N, Mock Trial or educational materials or equipment. The Foundation believes that there are educational opportunities for the youth of the District and it hopes to raise monies to facilitate maximizing such opportunities.

This not to indicate that the Foundation is getting out of the Scholarship funding area at all. That is still the focus of the Foundation. It was felt though that the Foundation could do more to assist the youth and that providing funds for these other areas was well worth a fund raising effort. So keep ever alert for the announcement of the Fund raising program and please give serious consideration to giving to it. Or as I have indicated if your preference is to establish a scholarship or give to one that exists please do that. The youth surely are the future and they are worth the investment.

Sincerely, John Hendricks
